Bio
Cynthia received a B.A. from Yale University in 1989 and an M.F.A. in graphic design from Yale University in 1995. She became a partner in Jack* Design in New Haven, CT, working with, among others, Universe Publishing, Yale School of Medicine, Yale School of Architecture, Brown University, Showtime, and Sundance Films. In 1998, Cynthia moved to Charlotte, NC, where she continues to work with both local and national clients (partial list below). Not content to simply practice design, she has explored additional directions over the years. With her letter-writing sister, Jessica Flaxman, she co-founded and art directed Papique! Paper With A Punch, an original stationery line sold in the Neiman Marcus catalogue and in stores across the country. In 2015 Cynthia and architect Carrie Gault formed PAC3, a public art partnership based on a mutual interest in dynamic form/space relationships. Their first commission, Peacehaven Community Farm Sensory Space, had the honor of being selected by the Society of American Mosaic Artists juried show for their Mosaic Arts International 2017 Site-specific Mosaic Exhibition. Cynthia has taught and served as a visiting critic at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, The Yale School of Art, and Central Piedmont Community College (recent WTVIPBS Carolina Impact story here). She is currently full time Lecturer at University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Cynthia has served as Design for Good Manager on the Board of AIGA Charlotte. She has served on the Advisory Board and as a chief designer for The Wall Poems of Charlotte, an ongoing public mural project that celebrates North Carolina’s literary heritage. Cynthia serves on the Board of Founders’ Circle Affiliate of the Mint Museum Craft + Design) and has been a member of the The Women’s Impact Fund for many years, serving on the Arts, Education and Human Services Grants Committees. In her spare time, she paints, performs with VOX (a semi-professional choir of 24-32 singers), runs copious miles, plays the guitar, writes and records original songs.
