Bio
Cynthia received a B.A. from Yale University in 1989, and an M.F.A. in graphic design from Yale University in 1995. She became a partner in Jack* Design in New Haven, CT, working with, among others, Universe Publishing, Yale School of Medicine, Yale School of Architecture, Brown University, Showtime, and Sundance Films. In 1998, Cynthia moved to Charlotte, NC, where she continues to work with both local and national clients (partial list below). With her letter-writing sister, Jessica Flaxman, she founded and art directed Papique! Paper With A Punch, an original stationery line which sold in the Neiman Marcus catalogue and stores across the country. In 2015 Cynthia and architect Carrie Gault formed PAC3, a public art partnership based on a mutual interest in dynamic form/space relationships. PAC3 believes: 1) public art can and should speak to as wide an audience as possible 2) its content and form should be meaningful and engaging. PAC3 strives to make artistic connections with the surrounding cultural landscape, and designs with the underlying idea that art can start a conversation with its audience. Their first commission, the Peacehaven Sensory Wall, is currently under construction in downtown Greensboro. Cynthia has taught and served as a visiting critic at The Philadelphia College of Art and The Yale School of Art, and currently teaches in the Advertising + Graphic Design department at Central Piedmont Community College (recent WTVIPBS Carolina Impact story here). Cynthia has served as Design for Good Manager on the Board of AIGA Charlotte. She has served on the Advisory Board and as a chief designer for The Wall Poems of Charlotte, an ongoing public mural project that celebrates North Carolina’s literary heritage. Cynthia has been a member of the The Women’s Impact Fund for many years, serving on the Arts, Education and Human Services Grants Committees. In her spare time, she sings with VOX, a semi-professional choir of 24-32 singers, runs copious miles, plays the guitar, and writes and records original songs.
